Big Tobacco is expected to spend tens of millions of dollars to defeat the measure. Polls show Prop 29 has a lead but the barrage of tobacco industry-funded negative advertising on television, online, and in mailboxes will try to confuse voters with scare tactics.

If approved by California voters in June, Prop 29 will generate $600 million for research into cancers and other tobacco-related illnesses.
